On 23 July 1952, the revolution began with the toppling ofKing Farouk in acoup d'état by theFree Officers Movement, a group of army officers led byMohamed Naguib andGamal Abdel Nasser. It ushered in awave of revolutionary politics in theArab world, and contributed to the escalation ofdecolonization, and the development ofThird World solidarity during theCold War. Though initially focused on grievances against King Farouk, the movement had more wide-ranging political ambitions. In the first three years of the Revolution, the Free Officers moved to abolish theconstitutional monarchy and thearistocracy of Egypt and Sudan, to establish a republic, to end theBritish occupation of the country, and to secure the independence of Sudan (previously governed as acondominium of Egypt and the United Kingdom).
