In theaftermath of World War II, theAllied Powers occupiedGermany and set up an extensive administrative structure. Occupation of the territory of what becameWest Germany ended in1955 with theBonn-Paris conventions, however,Soviet occupation of what became the territory ofEast Germany continued, and the occupation as a whole ended only in1990 with theTreaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany and the consequentReunification of Germany on October 3 of that year.
Austria, fully incorporated intoNazi Germany under theAnschluß, anannexed part ofNazi Germany duringWorld War II and a culturally related neighbour, was governed under a similar system, though separately. Together with West Germany, Austria became a fullysovereign state in1955, and promptly declaredmilitary neutrality.
