Catarina Cardoso Garcia da Fonseca Furtado (born 25 August 1972) is a Portuguese television presenter, actress andUNFPA Goodwill Ambassador. She is a daughter ofRTP journalistJoaquim Furtado.
Throughout her career on television which started in the early 1990s, Furtado has worked forSIC andRTP television networks, as well as the radio stationsRádio Comercial andRDP Antena 3. While an underage girl, she had a short non-talking role in the filmNon, ou a Vã Glória de Mandar directed byManoel de Oliveira. Later on she starred in films likeKilling Time (an English film that appeared in theCannes Film Festival),Fatima (an Italian movie byFabrizio Costa),Anjo da Guarda andPesadelo cor-de-rosa, among others.
Furtado's first big success was as a presenter on the TV showTop + on RTP, a Portuguese program featuring popular music videos and the national weeklyrecord chart. It was a music show that led to her hosting anMTV Portugal program on theSIC network, years before Portuguese MTV was founded. She went on to do a variety of shows, includingTreasure Hunt (Caça ao Tesouro), on SIC television, which was often shot on location in Portugal's smaller towns, where Catarina arrived in ahelicopter.
On 8 January 2018, Furtado was announced as one of the four hosts of the2018 Eurovision Song Contest alongsideSílvia Alberto,Daniela Ruah, andFilomena Cautela.[1]
Furtado is ofGoan descent through her mother. Her great-great grandfather was born inCandolim,Portuguese Goa.[2]
Furtado attended theConservatório Nacional (until 1990) specializing indance. She also trained in journalism and studieddrama at London'sInternational School of Acting from 1995 to 1997, as well asLee Strasberg'sMethod Studio in England.[citation needed] She was married to João Reis, an actor, from 2005 to 2023[3] and has a daughter, Maria Beatriz (born in 2006) and a son, João Maria (born in 2007).[citation needed]
