Catala Island Marine Provincial Park is aprovincial park inBritish Columbia, Canaded on the west coast ofVancouver Island at the mouth ofEsperanza Inlet,[1] betweenKyuquot Sound (N) andNootka Sound (S). The park is 955 ha. in size and was established in July 1995.
Catala Island, which is one of the islands comprising the park, was originally namedIsla de Catala on a chart made in 1792 bySpanish explorerDionisio Galiano. Galiano named it forMagin Catalá, aFranciscan who was serving as chaplain at the Spanish garrison atNootka Sound at the time. Catala, who returned to California in 1794, was born in 1761 inCatalonia (Spain), and had arrived in Mexico in 1786. Serving 44 years as a missionary on the Spanish-American coast, he died inSanta Clara, California in 1830.[2][3]
