Caryn R. McClelland is an American diplomat who is serving as theUnited States ambassador to Brunei. She assumed office in 2022.
McClelland earned aBachelor of Arts in English from theUniversity of California, Los Angeles; aMaster of Arts in international relations and affairs fromSan Francisco State University; and a Master of Science in national security strategy from theNational Defense University.[1]
A career diplomat, McClelland has been assigned to U.S. embassies and consulates inLondon, United Kingdom;Hanoi, Vietnam;Riga,Latvia;Surabaya, Indonesia;Bali, Indonesia;Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia;Baku, Azerbaijan;Dublin, Ireland;Ashgabat, Turkmenistan; and others.
McClelland was theMinister-counselor for economic affairs at theU.S. Embassy in London, serving as actingdeputy chief of mission. She previously served as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassies in Vietnam and Latvia, and as consul general in Surabaya, Indonesia. She was acting principal deputy assistant secretary of theBureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, and deputy special representative for commercial and business affairs in theBureau of Economic and Business Affairs.[2] McClelland also served as senior advisor toRichard Morningstar for Caspian Basin energy diplomacy.[2]
On July 16, 2021, PresidentJoe Biden nominated McClelland to be the nextUnited States ambassador to Brunei.[3][4] On September 30, 2021, a hearing on her nomination was held before theSenate Foreign Relations Committee. On October 19, 2021, her nomination was reported favorably out of committee.[5] On December 18, 2021, theUnited States Senate confirmed her nomination byvoice vote.[6]
McClelland arrived in the country in February 2022.[7] She presented her credentials to SultanHassanal Bolkiah on May 24, 2022.[8]
