Carlota Guerrero (born 1989 inBarcelona) is a Spanish photographer, filmmaker, and art director[1] known for exploring themes of femininity andbodily autonomy.[2][3]

Early life

Guerrero was born and raised inBarcelona. She took an interest in thevisual arts during her adolescence but only started teaching herself photography in her early 20s after being gifted a camera by a friend.[citation needed]

Career

Guerrero rose to fame in 2016 afterSolange Knowles, discovered Guerrero's photography on herInstagram page and hired her to photograph the cover forA Seat at the Table[4] andWhen I Get Home.[5][6][7] They also collaborated on music videos. Other celebrities she has photographed arePenélope Cruz,[8]Arca,Sita Abellan,[9][10] andRosalia,[11]Emilia Clarke, andRupi Kaur. She has also worked with brands and labels such asDior,Nike,Paloma Wool,Givenchy,Mugler, andHelmut Lang.[12][13] AtArt Basel in 2019, Guerrero staged a performance emulating an orgy including 30 people in collaboration withDesigual. The performance was well-received.[14][15] In 2021, her photo seriesMujeres negras (Black Women) was exhibited at theNational Art Museum of Catalonia. The pieces, which reflect onracism in Spain, feature Black models posed among marble sculptures at an art gallery. Proceeds were donated to refugee and immigrant women affected by structural racism.[16] That year, she also published her first book,Tengo un Dragón Dentro del Corazón: la fotografía de Carlota Guerrero (I Have a Dragon Inside My Heart: Photography by Carlota Guerrero) with Prestel.[17][18]
