Carlo Emmanuele Vizzani (1617 – 29 October 1661) was an Italianclassical scholar,translator, andcanonist.
Carlo Emmanuele Vizzani was born in Bologna in 1617. He obtained his doctorate inphilosophy andjurisprudence from the University of Bologna in 1634. He was a professor oflogic at theUniversity of Padua, but his knowledge in theclassics drew him to Rome, where he occupied a variety of positions: consistorial lawyer, secretary of theRoman Inquisition, Referendary of theApostolic Signatura, andcanon ofSt. Peter. In 1646 he published acritical edition ofOcellus Lucanus'De universi natura with his own Latin translation.[1] This important work was reissued byJoan Blaeu in 1661.[2] In 1658 Vizzani becamerector of theSapienza University of Rome. He died in 1661 and was buried in theDominican church ofSanta Maria Sopra Minerva. His funeral monument was designed and sculpted byDomenico Guidi.[3][4] Vizzani was a member of theAccademia degli Incogniti ofVenice and theAccademia dei Gelati of Bologna.
