Carcinology is a branch ofzoology that consists of the study ofcrustaceans. Crustaceans are a large traditionalsubphylum ofarthropods classified by having a hard exoskeleton made ofchitin or chitin andcalcium, three body regions, and jointed, paired appendages.[1] Crustaceans includelobsters,crayfish,shrimp,krill,copepods,barnacles andcrabs.[2] Most crustaceans are aquatic, but some can beterrestrial,sessile, orparasitic. Other names for carcinology aremalacostracology,crustaceology, andcrustalogy, and a person who studies crustaceans is acarcinologist or occasionally amalacostracologist, acrustaceologist, or acrustalogist.
