Carcinology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Study of crustaceans
Not to be confused withoncology, the study ofcancers andcarcinomas.
Various crustaceans, all of interest to carcinologists.

Carcinology is a branch ofzoology that consists of the study ofcrustaceans. Crustaceans are a large traditionalsubphylum ofarthropods classified by having a hard exoskeleton made ofchitin or chitin andcalcium, three body regions, and jointed, paired appendages.[1] Crustaceans includelobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, copepods, barnacles andcrabs.[2] Most crustaceans are aquatic, but some can beterrestrial, sessile, orparasitic. Other names for carcinology aremalacostracology, crustaceology, andcrustalogy, and a person who studies crustaceans is acarcinologist or occasionally amalacostracologist, acrustaceologist, or acrustalogist.

The wordcarcinology derives fromGreekκαρκίνος,karkínos, "crab"; and-λογία,-logia.

Subfields

Carcinology is a subdivision ofarthropodology, the study ofarthropods which includesarachnids, insects, andmyriapods.[3] Carcinology branches off into taxonomically oriented disciplines such as:[4]
