Capitol Latin (formerlyEMI Latin[1][2] andCapitol/EMI Latin) is a brand ofUniversal Music Latin Entertainment, a division ofUniversal Music Group. Previously, it was a subsidiary ofEMI.[3]

History

In 1989,José Behar, the former head ofCBS Discos, signedSelena to Capitol/EMI Latin, because he thought he had discovered the nextGloria Estéfan.[4]

In 1990, Capitol/EMI Latin acquired San Antonio, Texas–based Cara Records in order to capitalize on the popularity ofTejano. Artists under the Cara label includedMazz,David Lee Garza, andLa Mafia.

In mid-1993, Capitol/EMI Latin was rebranded as simply EMI Latin.

Popular EMI Latin performers linked to theEMI Televisa Music andTelevisa networks includedThalía,Pedro Fernández,RBD,María Daniela y su Sonido Lasser, andKudai. The label also signedreggaeton artists likeDJ Flex andTito El Bambino.

In 2009, EMI Latin ended its partnership with Televisa, moved fromMiami, toLos Angeles, and was renamed Capitol Latin.[5] AfterUniversal Music Group's acquisition of EMI in 2012, Capitol Latin merged withUniversal Music Latin Entertainment.[6][7] The Capitol Latin record label is now a brand of Universal Music Latin Entertainment division and continues to be distributed by Universal Music Group.
