Cao Lãnh (Vietnamese:[kaːw˧lajŋ̟˧˨˧] ;Vietnamese for "highest territory") is a ward ofĐồng Tháp Province,Vietnam. It is located at around10°28′2″N105°37′49″E / 10.46722°N 105.63028°E /10.46722; 105.63028.[1]

History

During the French colonial period Cao Lãnh found some supporters for the nationalist appeal ofTrần Huy Liệu'sĐông Pháp Thời Báo (Indochina Times) founded in May 1923.[2] Later, in the initial resistance to the French in 1945, theViệt Nam Quốc Dân Đảng and others in the South merged to form the Third Division of the popular army. Cao Lãnh was where the troops were reorganized into 23 units each of 500-600 men.[3]

Prior to 1975, Cao Lãnh was the capital of Kiến Phong province, in theMekong Delta region ofSouth Vietnam. In February 1976, Kiến Phong was merged withSa Đéc Province to become Đồng Tháp Province.Sa Đéc became the capital city of the new province. Cao Lãnh replaced Sa Đéc as the capital on April 24, 1994, and became a city in October 2007.

On June 16, 2025, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 1663/NQ-UBTVQH15 on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units of Dong Thap province in 2025[1]. Accordingly, the entire natural area and population size of Ward 1, Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 6 (Cao Lanh city), Hoa Thuan ward, Hoa An, Tinh Thoi, Tan Thuan Tay and Tan Thuan Dong communes will be arranged into a new ward called Cao Lanh ward.

After the merger, Cao Lãnh ward has 73.33 km2 (28.31 sq mi) of natural area and a population of 137,387 people.

Geography

Cao Lãnh Ward is located on the left bank of Tien River along National Highway 30, about 154 km from Ho Chi Minh City center, about 80 km from Can Tho city center, about 30 km from Sa Dec ward, about 60 km from Hong Ngu border ward, with geographical location:

  • The east borders Mỹ Thọ commune.
  • The west borders An Giang province, the boundary is Tien river.
  • The south borders Mỹ An Hưng and Tân Khánh Trung communes, the boundary is Tiền river.
  • The north borders Mỹ Ngãi and Mỹ Trà wards.
