TheCantabrian Sea[a] is the term used mostly inSpain to describe the coastalsea of theAtlantic Ocean that borders the northern coast ofSpain and the southwest side of the Atlantic coast ofFrance, included in theBay of Biscay. It extends from the capeEstaca de Bares in theprovince of A Coruña, to the mouth of the riverAdour, near the city ofBayonne on the coast of the department ofPyrénées-Atlantiques inFrench Basque Country. The Cantabrian Sea contains theAvilés Canyons System.[1]
The sea borders 800 km (500 mi) of coastline shared by the Spanish provinces ofA Coruña,Lugo,Asturias,Cantabria,Biscay andGipuzkoa, and the French area ofLabourd.
