In July 2004, Beckman auditioned to be a contestant forWorld Wrestling Entertainment'sRaw Diva Search.[3][26] Despite not being chosen to be in the final ten,[3] she was hired by the company under thegimmick of amakeup artist.[2][7] She competed onRaw in severalDiva contests, includinglingerie fashion shows andlimbo contests, until the end of the year.[27][28]

On June 30, 2005, Candice was moved toSmackDown! where she became involved in a storyline betweenTorrie Wilson andMelina.[2][29] On July 24, Candice made herpay-per-view debut atThe Great American Bash where she served as theSpecial Guest Referee for theBra and Panties match between Wilson and Melina.[30] She was then moved back toRaw in a trade along with Wilson.[31] In her next storyline, Candice and Torrie became villains by taunting2005 Diva Search winnerAshley Massaro, and they joined forces with fellowRaw DivaVictoria to form an alliance known as Ladies in Pink (later Vince's Devils). On the September 5 episode ofRaw, Wilson defeated Massaro after the interference from Victoria and Candice.[2] They continued feuding with Massaro untilTrish Stratus returned from alegitimate injury to help Massaro "retaliate" against Vince's Devils.[32] On the October 17 episode ofRaw, where she, Torrie and Victoria faced off against the team of Stratus, Massaro, and their new allyMickie James in a winning effort after Wilson pinned James.[2] On November 28 episode ofRaw, Candice teamed up with Victoria andTorrie Wilson in losing effort to Trish, Ashley and Mickie.[33] In November, Candice signed on to pose for the April 2006 issue ofPlayboy.[11] She had her first shot at theWWE Women's Championship in aFulfill Your Fantasy Battle Royal atTaboo Tuesday but was eliminated from the match by Massaro.[34] At theTribute to The Troops on December 19, Michelle teamed up withMaria Kanellis in a winning effort defeating then Women's ChampionTrish Stratus andAshley Massaro in a divas-tag-team match after Candice pinned Ashley.[2]

In January, Candice appeared atNew Year's Revolution in the first everBra and Panties Gauntlet match, where she was eliminated byMaria.[35] On the February 13 episode ofRaw, Michelle accompanied Torrie in a losing effort to Ashley.[2] After winning a number one contender'sDiva battle royal onRaw, Candice got her first singlesWWE Women's Championship match, but lost to then-championTrish Stratus on February 27.[36][37] After the match, Candice slapped Wilson, blaming her, in storyline, for the loss.[37] Vince's Devils later broke up when Torrie became a fan favorite after Candice and Victoria turned on her during Candice'sPlayboy cover unveiling.[38] This feud led to a match atWrestleMania 22 in which bothPlayboy cover girls competed in aPlayboy Pillow Fight.[39] Torrie Wilson won the match. On the June 12 episode ofRaw, Candice was defeated by Torrie in the first ever "Wet and Wild match", a wrestling match involving water balloons and squirt guns, in which the winner of the match would be on the cover of theWWE 2006 Summer Special magazine.[40] The feud continued sporadically in backstage segments where Candice was depicted asVince McMahon's "sex slave".[41] On the July 11 episode ofECW, the villainous Candice appeared asKelly Kelly's dance partner on that night'sKelly's Exposé segment, and attempted to seduce Kelly in a backstage segment before the two divas went out to perform.[2]

Singles competition and Women's Champion (2006–2007)

[edit]

On the July 17 episode ofRaw, Candice was the Special Guest Referee during a tag team match of Stratus and Wilson against Victoria andMickie James. James entered the match without being tagged in, so Candice threw her out of the ring. Afterwards, Victoria tried toclothesline Candice, but she ducked out of the way, allowing Stratus to perform aStratusfaction for the victory. As a result of her participation in the match, Candice became a fan favorite.[42] On theRaw followingUnforgiven, Candice won a match againstLita.[43] The next week, in her second match against Lita, Candice waspinned after she wasspeared by guest refereeEdge, in the first round of the WWE Women's Championship tournament.[44] On the November 27 episode ofRaw, during the Diva battle royal, Candice suffered alegitimate broken nose when Victoria kicked her in the face.[45] She had surgery on November 30 to repair herdeviated septum.[46]

Candice as theWWE Women's Champion in 2007

Candice returned atNew Year's Revolution on January 7, when she went to the ring with Maria to fight off Melina as she tried to interfere in the Women's Championship match between then-champion Mickie James and Victoria.[47] Candice made her in-ring return on January 22 when she and Mickie James defeated Victoria and Melina in a tag team match with Candice scoring the pinfall.[48] Candice then resumed her feud with Melina, who claimed in herblogs that noPlayboy cover model was capable of defeating her in the ring.[49] Candice took offense to this, which led to a Bra and Panties match between the two, which she lost.[50] During this time, Candice began training on her off-days to improve her in-ring abilities.[3] Weeks later, Candice was beginning to receive more air-time and higher profile matches, and she won tag matches that pitted her with Mickie James against Victoria and Melina. She also picked up several wins against the latter two in singles matches, which culminated atOne Night Stand, where Candice defeated Melina in the first ever match held in a swimming pool full of pudding.[51][52][53] Candice defeated Melina to capture her first WWE Women's Championship atVengeance, becoming the first everWWE Diva Search contestant to win the Women's Title.[12] Candice retained her title against Melina in a rematch atThe Great American Bash as well as debuting a newfinisher called theCandywrapper.[54]

Beth Phoenix became the number one contender for the Women's Title after winning a Diva battle royal atSummerSlam.[55] At theUnforgiven pay-per-view, however, Candice successfully retained her title in their match by countering one of Phoenix's moves with acrucifix pin.[56] Their feud continued when Phoenix pinned Candice during a non-titlemixed tag team match onRaw on September 24. AtNo Mercy on October 7, Candicedropped the title to Phoenix, ending her reign as Women's Champion.[57] On October 22, Candice legitimately cracked herclavicle during her rematch for the Women's Title against Phoenix in atwo out of three falls match; Phoenix ran into the ropes, causing Candice to fall face-first off of the turnbuckle onto her face, neck, and shoulders necessitating arushed finish and putting her out of action for 14 weeks.[58][59]

Injuries and release (2008–2009)

[edit]

Candice made her on-screen return on the February 18, 2008, episode ofRaw, distractingBeth Phoenix during a match withMaria. She returned to in-ring action on March 17, teaming up with Maria to defeatJillian Hall andVictoria.[60] During the match, Candice injured her left shoulder by tearing the scar tissue over her previously broken left clavicle.[60] Unlike her previous injury, Candice broke her clavicle in four separate places, in essence, shattering it.[61] As a result, Candice was replaced byAshley for her scheduled match atWrestleMania XXIV. On March 23, Candice underwent successful surgery on her re-broken clavicle.

On the September 1 episode ofRaw, Candice made her in-ring return match teaming up withKelly Kelly andMickie James to defeat Jillian Hall,Katie Lea Burchill and Beth Phoenix, with Candice pinning Phoenix.[62] Candice received a push upon her return as she was named the number one contender for the Women's Championship, but lost to Beth Phoenix atNo Mercy. On November 23, 2008, Candice competed in 5 on 5 Survivor Series Elimination Match where her team went victorious. On the February 2 episode ofRAW, Candice was defeated by Beth Phoenix after an interference by Mendes and Marella.[2] On the February 16 episode ofRAW, Candice, James and Kelly stopped Marella and Mendes from interfering in the Women's Championship match between Melina and Phoenix, which was won by Melina.[2]

On April 15, 2009, Candice was drafted to theSmackDown brand as part of the2009 Supplemental Draft.[63] She, however, never reappeared on the brand and was released from her WWE contract on June 19, 2009.[13]
