Campynemataceae (Campynemaceae ) is afamily offlowering plants . The family consists of twogenera and fourspecies [ 5] ofperennial herbaceous plantsendemic toNew Caledonia andTasmania .
Originally described byDumortier in 1829, Campynemaceae consisted of a single genus,Campynema , described byLabillardière inTasmania in 1804. In 1893 Baillon identified a closely related genus,Campynemanthe inNew Caledonia .[ 6] Together the two genera make up the family Campynemataceaesensu Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG), within theLiliales order .[ 7]
While historically, the two genera have generally been treated together, theircircumscription has varied considerably. The third edition (1903) ofEngler 'sSyllabus only included Campynema, but positioned it as Campynematoideae, a subfamily ofAmaryllidaceae .[ 4]
The synthesis of molecular data withcladistic analysis suggests that the Liliales form one of eleven orders ofmonocotyledons .[ 8] Sequencing of therbcL andtrnL-F plastid genes revealed four main Liliales lineages:[ 9]
Liliaceae group:Liliaceae (including some formerUvulariaceae andCalochortaceae ),Philesiaceae andSmilacaceae ; Campynemataceae; Colchicaceae group (Colchicoid lilies):Colchicaceae (includingPetermannia andUvularia ),Alstroemeriaceae andLuzuriaga ; Melanthiaceae (includingTrilliaceae ).This suggested that the Campynemataceae form one of seven families within the Liliales order.
