John Cameron Fraser (born 24 May 1941) is a Scottish former professionalfootballer who played as afull back.[3] He played 80 games forDunfermline Athletic in theScottish Football League and a further 72 forAston Villa andBirmingham City in the EnglishFootball League.[4]
Fraser, born inBlackford, Perth and Kinross, began his football career as a youngster with Gairdoch United before joiningDunfermline Athletic in 1958 at the age of 17.[3] UnderJock Stein's management at Dunfermline, he was aScottish Cup-winner in1961, defeatingCeltic 2–0 in the replay after the original tie had finished goalless.[5][6] Fraser, then 19, was the youngest player in the squad.[7] This victory meant that Dunfermline qualified for theEuropean Cup Winners' Cup. Fraser played in the club'srun to the quarter-final, in which they lost toÚjpesti Dózsa 5–3on aggregate, though he missed the first leg of the quarter-final due toinfluenza apparently brought on by avaccination.[8][9] He was twice capped forScotland at under-23 level during his time with Dunfermline.[3][10]
In October 1962, Fraser joined EnglishFirst Division clubAston Villa for a fee of £24,000,[11] which paid for Dunfermline's new main stand.[7] He played 40 games for Aston Villa in all competitions, and was on the losing side in the1963 Football League Cup final againstBirmingham City. Following a contractual dispute with the club he quit, joining his wife's hairdressing business in London, before returning to football in February 1965 with Birmingham City, who paid Villa a £9,000 fee for his services.[3][11]
Fraser made a few appearances in attack for Birmingham,relegated to theSecond Division at the end of the1964–65 season, and played regularly at right-back the following season.[12] He then returned to Scotland to joinFalkirk, though never played for the first team.[3][4]
In 2007, Fraser was reported as spending much of his time in Australia and the Far East.[13] His father William played professional football forAldershot andNorthampton Town.[3]
