TheCalymmian Period (fromAncient Greek:κάλυμμα,romanized: kálymma, meaning 'cover') is the firstgeologic period in theMesoproterozoicEra and lasted from 1600 to 1400 Mya (million years ago). Instead of being based onstratigraphy, these dates are definedchronometrically.
The period is characterised by the expansion of existingplatform covers, and by newplatforms forming onbasements that were recentlycratonized.
Thesupercontinent ofColumbia started to break up during the Calymmian some 1500 Mya. TheVolyn biota have also been dated to 1500 Mya.
