Callum Anthony Howe (born 9 April 1994) is an English professionalfootballer who plays as adefender forNational League sideYork City.
Howe began his career atScunthorpe United, turning professional in 2012. He spent three years at the club without making a first-team appearance and instead enjoyedloan spells atBradford Park Avenue,Frickley Athletic,Gainsborough Trinity,Gateshead andAlfreton Town. He was named Frickley Athletic's Player of the Season for 2012–13. He signed withLincoln City in July 2015. He had loan spells atSouthport andEastleigh before helping Lincoln to win theNational League title in 2016–17. He was sold on toPort Vale in January 2018 before moving on toHarrogate Town four months later. He was sold toSolihull Moors for an undisclosed fee in July 2019 and was named on the 2019–20 National League Team of the Year. In July 2023, he joined York City for an undisclosed fee and went on to be named on the 2024–25 National League Team of the Year.
Howe began his career atScunthorpe United and was the onlyyouth team player to be offered a professionalcontract bymanagerAlan Knill in 2012.[4] On 3 December 2012, he joinedConference North sideBradford Park Avenue on a one-monthloan.[5] He made his first-team debut for the Avenue 12 days later in a 2–0 defeat atWorcester City.[6] He made one further appearance before his loan spell atHorsfall Stadium came to an end. On 15 February 2013, he joinedFrickley Athletic of theNorthern Premier League Premier Division on a one-month loan; a colony of former Scunthorpe players were already at the club, includingTerry Barwick, Joe Wilcox, Jake Picton and Tom Johnstone.[7] United managerBrian Laws said that "I believe he will gain a lot of experience by going into thenon-League system and playing some games".[8] He impressed at the "Blues" so much as to win the club's Player of the Season award despite only arriving in the second half of the2012–13 season.[9]
On 22 November 2013, he returned to the Conference North after joiningGainsborough Trinity on a one-month loan deal, where fellow "Iron" playerJamie Wootton was also on loan.[10] The next day he scored on his debut in a 2–0 victory atColwyn Bay.[11] His loan atThe Northolme was extended until the end of the2013–14 season.[12] He played a total of 24 games forSteve Housham's "Holy Blues", scoring two goals. He signed a new one-year contract with Scunthorpe in May 2014 after reportedly being highly rated by managerRuss Wilcox.[13]
On 10 October 2014, he joinedGateshead of theConference Premier on a one-month loan.[14] He joined the "Tynesiders" after managerGary Mills lost James Curtis due to injury.[14] The following day he was declared a hero on his "Heed" debut after scoring the equalising goal in a 1–1 draw atForest Green Rovers, which stretched the club's unbeaten run to nine games.[15] However, he only featured in one further game at theGateshead International Stadium before his loan spell ended.[16] On 16 January 2015, he joined Conference Premier sideAlfreton Town on a three-month loan deal.[17] He featured in 13 games forNicky Law's "Reds", and scored one goal in a 4–2 win overSouthport atNorth Street on 7 February.[18] He was released by Scunthorpe at the end of the season.[19]
On 15 July 2015, Howe signed a one-year contract withLincoln City after impressing managerChris Moyses on trial.[20] He became a first-team regular atSincil Bank during the2015–16 season, making 31 appearances. On 25 August 2016, he joined Southport on a one-month loan after "Sandgrounders" defenderChris Doyle picked up a long-term knee injury.[21] He played 18 games forSteve Burr's Southport, and after returning to Lincoln he went on to feature 13 times in the latter half of the2016–17 season as the club regainedpromotion to theEnglish Football League after finishing as champions of the National League.
In June 2017, he signed a 12-month contract extension with Lincoln.[22] However, "Imps" managerDanny Cowley stated that he was happy with the centre-back options inLuke Waterfall,Sean Raggett,Robert Dickie andMichael Bostwick, so would look to loan Howe out so that he could find first-team football elsewhere.[23] On 15 August 2017, he joined National League sideEastleigh on a five-month loan deal, with the "Spitfires" missing bothRéda Johnson andRyan Cresswell due to injury.[24] ManagerRichard Hill said that: "I've known Callum and been a big admirer of his for quite a while, he and [centre-back]Boycey played together at Scunthorpe – in fact they're best mates". He went on to serve as clubcaptain, scoring four goals in 28 matches, and upon being recalled by Lincoln in January, Eastleigh bossAndy Hessenthaler said that "he's been great, in the last couple of weeks especially".[25]
On 31 January 2018, Howe joinedPort Vale for an undisclosed fee, signing an 18-month contract.[26] ManagerNeil Aspin had also signed centre-backsCharlie Raglan and Kyle Howkins on loan earlier in the day.[27] He wastransfer-listed at the end of the2017–18 season after making just three appearances for the "Valiants".[28]
On 25 May 2018, Howe was sold on to National League newcomersHarrogate Town for a "small fee".[29][30] He scored nine goals from 48 appearances during the2018–19 season, helpingSimon Weaver's Town to reach the play-offs, where they were beaten 3–1 atAFC Fylde at the quarter-final stage.[31] He was named as Harrogate's Players' Player of the Season.[32]
On 27 July 2019, Howe signed a three-year contract with National League sideSolihull Moors after moving for an undisclosed fee that was reported to be a Harrogate club record.[32][33] He scored six goals in 45 appearances in the2019–20 season, which was permanently suspended on 26 March due to theCOVID-19 pandemic in England, with Moors in eighth-place.[34] He was named on the National League Team of the Year, along with centre-back partner Alex Gudger.[35] A knee injury restricted him to just five appearances in the2020–21 campaign.[36] He was given a two-year contract extension by managerNeal Ardley after returning to full fitness from hip surgery.[37] He played 32 league games in the2021–22 season and went on to score in the 3–1 play-off semi-final victory overChesterfield atDamson Park.[38][39] He played at theLondon Stadium in theplay-off final, which ended in a 2–1 defeat toGrimsby Town afterextra time.[40] He was appointed as club captain following the departure ofKyle Storer in January 2023.[41] He scored three goals in 36 games in the2022–23 season.[38]
On 7 July 2023, Howe was signed by National League sideYork City for an undisclosed fee.[42] He was named in the National League Team of the Week for his performance in a 0–0 draw withKidderminster Harriers on 9 March.[43] He played 42 of York's 46 league games in the2023–24 campaign.[38] He captained York to four successive wins, which took the "Minstermen" to the top of the table by mid-September 2024.[44]
He was named in the Non-League Paper Team of the Day for his performance in a 0–0 draw away atAldershot Town on 21 September 2025.[45] On 1 December, he was named in the Team of the Day and the Team of the Week after scoring in a 3–0 win overSouthend United.[46] In the return fixture with Aldershot Town, he scored and provided an assist in a 7–2 victory.[47] He started every league game of the2024–25 season.[38] York qualified for the play-off semi-finals, where they were beaten byOldham Athletic.[48] He was named on the National League Team of the Year for the second time, alongside teammates Harrison Male and Ollie Pearce.[49]
Howe is a centraldefender with good aerial ability in both boxes.[33]
