California's 1st congressional district is aU.S. congressional district inCalifornia.Doug LaMalfa, aRepublican, has represented the district since January 2013. Currently, it encompasses the northeastern part of the state. Since the 2022 election, it includes the counties ofButte,Colusa,Glenn,Lassen,Modoc,Shasta,Siskiyou,Sutter, andTehama, and most ofYuba County. The largest cities in the district areChico,Redding, andYuba City.[1]
Prior to redistricting in 2021, it included the counties ofButte,Lassen,Modoc,Plumas,Shasta,Sierra,Siskiyou, andTehama, most ofNevada County, part ofGlenn County, and part ofPlacer County. In the 2021 redistricting, it added theYuba–Sutter area and removed most of its share of theSierra Nevada.[4]
Prior to 2013, the GOP last held the seat in 1998 whenU.S. RepresentativeFrank Riggs decided to run for theU.S. Senate. Riggs was replaced by long-time DemocraticAssemblyman andState Senator Mike Thompson. Redistricting in 2001 added Democratic-leaning areas ofYolo County.
John Kerry won the district in2004 presidential election with 59.7% of the vote.Barack Obama carried the district in2008 presidential election with 65.60% of the vote. The redistricting after the 2010 census made the district much more Republican-leaning; Mitt Romney and Donald Trump won the district by double digits in 2012, 2016, and 2020 respectively.

Under the 2020 redistricting, California's 1st district is located in northeastern California, encompassingButte,Colusa,Glenn,Lassen,Modoc,Shasta,Siskiyou,Sutter, andTehama Counties, as well as partYuba County. The area in Yuba County includes the cities ofMarysville andWheatland; and the census-designated places ofBeale AFB,Linda,Olivehurst, andPlumas Lake.
Yuba County is split between this district and the3rd district. They are partitioned by State Highway 70, Ellis Rd, and Union Pacific.[9]
