Calcinaia (Latin:Vicus Vitri) is acomune (municipality) and town in theprovince of Pisa in theItalian regionTuscany, located about 50 kilometres (31 mi) west ofFlorence and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) east ofPisa.
Calcinaia was founded before the year 1000 on the right bank of theArno River asVico Vitri, the current name being attested from 1193. At the time it was a fief of the counts ofFucecchio, later replaced by the UpezzinghiGhibelline family of Pisa.
Contended for centuries by the Republics of Pisa andLucca, it was later conquered byFlorence in the 15th century. In 1555 Grand DukeCosimo I de' Medici had hydraulic works built here to regulate the floods of the Arno, a move which boosted agriculture in the area.
In the district of Sardina, the chapel of St. Stephen is the major attraction.[3]
