Cajatambo is one of nine provinces in theLima Region ofPeru. It is bordered to the north by theAncash Region, to the east by theHuánuco Region, to the south by theprovince of Oyón, and to the west by theprovince of Huaura.
From 1851 to 1916 Cajatambo was part ofAncash Region and also included the areas of the provinces ofBolognesi andOcros, which remained in that region. Bolognesi, including Ocros until 1990, split from Cajatambo in 1903; in 1916 Cajatambo was given to Lima Region.

The capital of the province is the city ofCajatambo.
Historically, the principal products of the province have beencattle andsheep, althoughcochineal is also produced in the area.[2]
