TheCOVID-19 vaccination campaign in Italy is a massimmunization campaign that was put in place by the Italian government in order to respond to theongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It started on 27 December 2020, together with most countries in theEuropean Union.

The vaccination campaign was managed by the Ministry of Health and the special commissionerDomenico Arcuri until 1 March 2021,[2][3] when he was replaced by Army GeneralFrancesco Paolo Figliuolo.[4]

Workers had to exhibit a pass stating vaccination or a negative test from 15/10/2021 to 30/04/2022.[5]Vaccination against COVID-19 was mandatory for all people older than 50 in Italy from 15/02/2022 to 30/06/2022.

[edit]

In the first months of the vaccination campaign, the governmental agencies targeted the health medical and administrative personnel, together with the guests and personnel of nursing homes.[6]

December 2020

[edit]

The Italian vaccination campaign was coordinated and agreed with theEuropean Union (EU). The EU countries, as per previous agreements, received the vaccine provisions according to a centralized plan developed by theEuropean Commission.[12][13]

On 30 December 2020, 359,775 doses of vaccine were delivered by Pfizer–BioNTech.[12]

On 31 December 2020, 110,175 doses of vaccine were delivered by Pfizer–BioNTech.[12]

On 6 January 2021, theEuropean Medicines Agency (EMA) gave its authorization for theModerna vaccine.[14] At 8 pm on 7 January 2021, 379,910 people were vaccinated in Italy.[12]

According to a scientific study of COVID-19 virology, the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine also protects against the two mutations of the virus that have spread in the United Kingdom andSouth Africa.[15]

Both strains share a common mutation called N501Y, a slight alteration at one point in the protein that covers the virus.[15]

On 10 January 2021, theCampania region in Italy had the highest percentage of administration compared to the doses possessed. It also claimed to have exhausted the stock.[16][17]

On 20 January 2021, the vaccination campaign was slowed down due to a lack of vaccine stock.[24]

On 20 January 2021,AstraZeneca delays the delivery of the vaccine and reduces the expected quantities for deliveries across Europe.[25]

The delay in vaccine supply is delaying the vaccination campaign. On 29 January 2021,Moderna also cut vaccine supplies by 20%. About 300,000 doses are missing in the supply of vaccines provided for in the agreements withModerna.[26]

TheEuropean Union is in sharp confrontation withAstraZeneca on the timing and quantity of vaccine supplies. This leads to a serious delay in the Italian and European vaccination campaign.[27]
