T-cell surface glycoprotein CD8 alpha chain (Cluster ofDifferentiation8a), is a protein encoded byCD8Agene.[5]

Function

[edit]

TheCD8 protein is a cell surfaceglycoprotein found on mostcytotoxic T lymphocytes that mediates efficientcell-cell interactions within theimmune system. The CD8, acting as acoreceptor, and theT-cell receptor on the T lymphocyte recognizeantigen displayed by anantigen-presenting cell (APC) in the context ofclass I MHC molecules. The functional coreceptor is either ahomodimer composed of two alpha chains, or aheterodimer composed of one alpha and one beta chain. Both alpha and beta chains share significanthomology tovariable domain ofimmunoglobulin light chains. This gene encodes the CD8 alpha chain isoforms. Two alternative transcripts encoding distinct isoforms, onemembrane associated and onesecreted, have been identified.[5]
