Cómbita is a town and municipality in theColombianDepartment ofBoyacá, part of the sub region of theCentral Boyacá Province. Cómbita is situated on theAltiplano Cundiboyacense and bordersArcabuco and the department ofSantander in the north,Sotaquirá in the northeast,Tuta andOicatá in the east, department capitalTunja at 8.5 kilometres (5.3 mi) away andMotavita in the south and Arcabuco and Motavita in the west.[1]
Cómbita was in the time before the arrival of the Spanishconquistadores inhabited by theMuisca, organized in their looseMuisca Confederation. Theruler of the northern Muisca was thezaque ofHunza, modern day Tunja. Thecacique of Cómbita was loyal to thezaque.[1]
In theChibcha language of the Muisca, Cómbita means either "Hand of the jaguar and wheel of life" or "Force of the summit".[1][2]
Modern Cómbita was founded in 1586.[3]
