Byun Byung-joo (Korean: 변병주;Korean pronunciation:[pjʌn.bjʌŋ.dʑu] or[pjʌn][pjʌŋ.dʑu]; born 26 April 1961) is a former South Koreanfootball player.
Byun played for theSouth Korea national football team in1986 and1990 FIFA World Cup, but South Korea failed to win a victory in the two World Cups. He said he was being inconvenienced by hittingBulgaria's goalpost with his shot, which could have earned South Korea's first-ever World Cup victory if successful.[1]
Byun scored South Korea's second goal, helping his team defeatSaudi Arabia 2–0 in the1986 Asian Games final.
Byun scored with aPanenka againstAntonín Panenka's country Czechoslovakia in a penalty shoot-out of the1988 Korea Cup semi-finals.[2]
Nicknamed the "Bullet" in South Korea, Byun showed fast dribbles and accurate crosses.[3] He was an important winger for South Korea at the time, although he was criticized for his monotonous pattern.[4]
