TheBurbank Leader is a weeklynewspaper published by theOutlook Newspapers Group inBurbank, California.[1]
In 1908, E.M. McClure published the first edition of theBurbank Review.[2] In 1911, he sold the paper to H.E. Lawrence, who then merged it with theIndependent.[3] In 1914, Mr. Lawrence died.[4]
In 1916, his widow Ida M. Lawrence sold the paper to Samuel M. Greene and C.M. Brosius.[5] In 1917, Judge Charles E. Salisbury bought the paper,[6] and he was eventually succeeded by W.P. Coffman.[7]
In 1920, Harvey L. Ling purchased the paper,[8] and soon bought and absorbed a rival paper called thePathfinder.[9] In 1926, theReview was expanded into a daily.[9] In 1930, Ling purchased and absorbed theBurbank Daily Tribune.[9] In 1948, Niver W. Beaman became a co-owner.[10]
In 1950, Southern California Associated Newspapers, a subsidiary ofCopley Press, acquired theReview from Ling.[11] In 1974, Copley Press sold four Los Angeles dallies, including theDaily Review andGlendale News Press, along with nine weekly newspapers toMorris Newspapers.[12] In 1976, Morris sold two dallies and five weeklies in the L.A. area to California Offset Printers.[13]
In 1980, California Offset Printers sold nine papers including theDaily Review andNews Press toIngersoll Publications. At that time theNews Press had a circulation of 20,621 and theDaily Review had a circulation of 10,724.[14] By 1985, theDaily Review's circulation had fallen to around 8,000. At that time the paper's print schedule was decreased to twice a week and the publication was renamed to theBurbank Leader.[15]
In 1989, Page Group Publishing, which had just bought theOrange Coast Daily Pilot and theHuntington Beach Independent, acquired theBurbank Leader,Foothill Leader andNews Press from Ingersoll.[16] In 1993,Times Mirror Company bought the newspaper group.[17]
On April 18, 2020, it was announced by theLos Angeles Times that the newspaper would cease publication. Before the closure, the print circulation was around 5,000 copies.[18] On April 30, 2020, theBurbank Leader was purchased by theOutlook Newspapers Group. The newspaper continued to be published by its new owner.[19]
