Parliamentary elections were held inBulgaria on 19 April 1997.[1] The result was a victory for theUnited Democratic Forces (an alliance of theUnion of Democratic Forces (SDS), theDemocratic Party, theBulgarian Agrarian National Union-Nikola Petkov and theBulgarian Social Democratic Party),[2] which won 137 of the 240 seats. Following the election, SDS leaderIvan Kostov became prime minister.[3]
