Bulgan Province (Mongolian:Булган аймаг) is one of the 21provinces of Mongolia, located in the north of the country. Its capital is also namedBulgan.

History

[edit]

Bulgan Province was established in 1937 after being separated fromSelenge Province.[2][3] In 1994,Orkhon Province was taken out from Bulgan Province area to form an independent province.[4]

Geography

[edit]

The province (or aimag) is surrounded byRussia (Buryatia) in the north, theKhövsgöl Province in the northwest,Arkhangai in the southwest,Övörkhangai in the south,Töv in the southeast, andSelenge in the northeast. The smallOrkhon Province forms an enclave at the border to Selenge.

The north of the aimag is characterized by alpine forests, gradually blending in the arid steppe plains of the central Mongolian highland. The main rivers are theOrkhon and theSelenge, first of which enter the aimag from Övörkhangai while the second is enters from Khövsgöl Province. As a result, southern and central Bulgan is one of Mongolia's few arable regions.
