Budyonnovsk (Russian:Будённовск) is atown inStavropol Krai,Russia. In 2010 the population of Budyonnovsk was 64,624.

History

The town was founded in 1799 byArmenian settlers fromDerbent.[2] DuringWorld War II, Budyonnovsk was occupied byGerman troops from August 18, 1942 to January 10, 1943.

TheBudyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis took place in Budyonnovsk from June 14 to 19 of 1995.

Administrative and municipal status

Within theframework of administrative divisions, Budyonnovsk serves as theadministrative center ofBudyonnovsky District, even though it is not a part of it.[1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as thetown of krai significance of Budyonnovsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of thedistricts.[1] As amunicipal division, the town of krai significance of Budyonnovsk is incorporated within Budyonnovsky Municipal District asBudyonnovsk Urban Settlement.[4]

Climate

Budyonnovsk has ahumid continental climate (Köppen:Dfa) with low precipitation, much sunlight and large differences between summer and winter. The town experiences some of the hottest summers in Russia. Although precipitation is relatively low, the proximity of theCaspian Sea brings significant humidity, causing a steamy summer heat.

Military

Budyonnovsk air base of theRussian Aerospace Forces is located 14 km (8.7 miles) northwest of the town.

Religion

Three Armenian churches were torn down by Soviet authorities during the Soviet period.[9] On July 1, 2010, a new Holy AscensionArmenian apostolic church was opened in Budyonnovsk.[10]
