A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament, more commonly known asBrown–Driver–Briggs orBDB (from the name of its three authors) is a standard reference forBiblical Hebrew andBiblical Aramaic,[1] first published in 1906. It is organized by (Hebrew) alphabetical order ofthree letter roots.
BDB was based on the Hebrew-Germanlexicon ofWilhelm Gesenius, translated byEdward Robinson. The chief editor wasFrancis Brown, with the co-operation ofSamuel Rolles Driver andCharles Augustus Briggs, hence the name Brown–Driver–Briggs. Some modern printings have added theStrong's reference numbers for Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic words.[citation needed]
In 2013,semitistsJo Ann Hackett andJohn Huehnergard received aNational Endowment for the Humanities grant to fund the creation of a revised and updated electronic version of the BDB; the resultingBiblical Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon will be available through a website (Semitica Electronica) or via print-on-demand.[1]
