Brian Charles Randle (born February 8, 1985) is an American assistant coach for thePhoenix Suns of theNational Basketball Association (NBA). He playedcollege basketball at theUniversity of Illinois. He is a former professionalbasketball player. He was a three-timeIsraeli Basketball Premier League Defensive Player of the Year, and was the 2010Israeli Basketball Premier League Finals MVP.
Randle graduated fromPeoria Notre Dame High School in 2003 and had an outstanding senior season averaging 22.9 points, 12.8 rebounds, 5.2 blocks, and 3.1 assists. He finished fourth in voting forIllinois Mr. Basketball in his senior season, and was recruited byBill Self. He was selected to the State Farm Holiday Classic all-tournament team in three consecutive seasons, from 2000 to 2002.
In the 2003–04 season, Randle played in 32 games – including starting 9 games. Randle averaged 2.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. On December 30, 2003, Randle had his best statistical game, grabbing 11 rebounds and 9 points againstUIC.
He took amedical redshirt during the 2004-05NCAA tournament run season after punching a wall in frustration during practice and breaking his hand.[1]
In the 2005-06 college basketball season, Randle was one of three teamcaptains for theFighting Illini, along withDee Brown andJames Augustine. Randle had his best game playingWisconsin on the road on January 31, 2006, with a double-double. Against the Badgers, Randle scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds helping the Illini to a 66–51 victory. Randle was named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team, and ranked ninth in the Big Ten infield goal percentage.
In the 2006-07 college basketball season, Randle once again was looked to as a leader for theFighting Illini, along withWarren Carter,Jamar Smith, Rich McBride, andShaun Pruitt. He had an early season groin injury that caused him to miss most of the non-conference schedule.
Randle graduated with a bachelor's degree in agri-finance and a master's in sports management.[2]
Randle has signed withHapoel Gilboa Galil Elyon of Israel prior to 2008–09 season. In his second season with the club he led them to the Israeli Championship, beatingMaccabi Tel Aviv in the finals of the Israeli Final Four.[3] He was the 2010Israeli Basketball Premier League Finals MVP.
In the summer of 2010 Randle left Galil Elyon and signed withHapoel Jerusalem on a two-year contract.[4]
On October 10, 2012, he signed on a two-month trial contract (with an extension until the end of the season) with the German teamAlba Berlin.[5] In February 2013, he returned to Israel and signed withHapoel Tel Aviv.[6]
On August 15, 2013, Randle signed withMaccabi Haifa of Israel for the 2013–14 season.[7]
On July 25, 2014, he signed a two-year deal withMaccabi Tel Aviv.[8] He was a three-timeIsraeli Basketball Premier League Defensive Player of the Year (2009,2014, and2015),
On July 25, 2015, he left Maccabi and signed withLokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar,[9] but he was released from the team after failing physical tests.[10] On September 1, 2015, he re-signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv for the 2015–16 season.[11]
On January 21, 2017, Randle returned to his former club Hapoel Jerusalem.[12] In March 2017, he got injured and missed the remainder of the season.[13]
On August 21, 2017, Randle signed with the Italian teamEnel Brindisi for the 2017–18 season.[14] In November 2017, he retired from professional basketball.[15]
On September 21, 2018, Randle was announced to be a part of theMinnesota Timberwolves' coaching staff as an assistant video coordinator, effectively confirming his retirement as a player.[16] Randle was later promoted to a player development coaching role with the Timberwolves on June 27, 2019.[17]
On September 8, 2020, Randle was named a part of thePhoenix Suns' coaching staff as a proper assistant coach.[18] In his first season with the Suns, he not only helped the team reach theNBA playoffs for the first time since2010, but also theNBA Finals for the first time since1993.
On July 10, 2024, Randle became an assistant coach for theWashington Wizards.[19]
