Sir Brian Edward Frederick Fender,CMG (born 15 September 1934)[1][2] is an English academic executive.
Fender was Chief Executive of theHigher Education Funding Council for England from 1995 to 2001.[3] Prior to that he wasVice-Chancellor ofKeele University (1985–95),[3] Associate Director and Director of theInstitut Laue-Langevin inGrenoble, France and Chairman of the Science Board of the UK'sScience and Engineering Research Council.[4] He is a graduate and Fellow ofImperial College.[5]
Sir Brian is currently a member of the University Grants Committee, Hong Kong, President of theNational Foundation for Educational Research, Chairman of the National Council for Drama Training and a Director of Higher Aims Ltd, a private consultancy involved in higher education and research management. Sir Brian is a Fellow of theInstitute of Physics, theRoyal Society of Chemistry and a Companion of theChartered Management Institute. He has honorary degrees or fellowships from eleven universities and colleges.[5]
Sir Brian is the current chairman and President of theInstitute of Knowledge Transfer.[5]
Fender was born inBarrow-in-Furness, and lived in theEden Valley until 1949.[6] He attendedCarlisle Grammar School andSale County Grammar School.[7]
Fender has been married twice, and has a son and three daughters.[7]
