Cheung has a dual major in finance, broadcast, digital journalism, and a minor in Chinese studies, having been toSyracuse University andJohns Hopkins University Advanced Academic Programs. While he attendedSyracuse University, Cheung first started at NBC News as an intern atNBCUniversal in 2012 at their business development department, and was also an intern at their news department in 2013. He then went overseas to Hong Kong to be an intern atThe Global Institute for Tomorrow for three months in 2013, then right back toNew York, New York andEnglewood Cliffs, New Jersey atNBCUniversal andCNBC, working at their assignment desks from 2014-2015. He then graduated with a 3.8 GPA and received many awards and scholarships.[2]
Cheung started his career as an analyst at theFederal Reserve for a year and then worked atYahoo Finance as a writer, on-air reporter, and anchor.[3]
In 2022, Cheung rejoined NBC News (where he spent three summers as an intern during his college years) and was named a reporter for NBC News' Business and Technology Unit.[4] In this role, he covered various economic topics, which include inflation, jobs reports, retail sales, theCollapse of Silicon Valley Bank, and the2023 United States banking crisis.[5][6]
In December 2023, NBC News promoted him to business and data correspondent, continuing to cover business and economic issues and reports across all NBC News platforms, especially digital.[7][8]
