TheBolnisi cross (Georgian:ბოლნური ჯვარიbolnuri ǰvari) is across symbol, taken from a 5th-century ornament at theBolnisi Sioni church, which came to be used as a national symbol ofGeorgia.
It is a variant of thecross pattée popular in Christian symbolism of late antiquity and the early medieval period. The same symbol gave rise to cross variants used during theCrusades, theMaltese cross of theKnights Hospitaller and (via theJerusalem cross and theBlack cross of theTeutonic Order) theIron cross used by the German military.
The four small crosses used in theGeorgian flag are officially described asbolnur-kacʼxuri (bolnur-katskhuri,ბოლნურ-კაცხური) even though they are only slightlypattée.
