TheBolinao language orBinubolinao is aCentral Luzon language spoken primarily in the municipalities ofBolinao andAnda,Pangasinan in thePhilippines. It has approximately 50,000 speakers,[2] making it the second most widely spokenSambalic language. Most Bolinao speakers can speakPangasinan and/orIlocano.Ethnologue reports 510monolinguals for this language.[3]

Phonology

Bolinao has 21phonemes: 16consonants and fivevowels. Syllable structure is relatively simple. Each syllable contains at least a consonant and a vowel.

Bolinao has five vowels. They are:

There are six maindiphthongs:/aɪ/,/əɪ/,/oɪ/,/uɪ/,/aʊ/, and/iʊ/.

A common proverb[4] from Filipino heroJose Rizal in English, "He who does not acknowledge his beginnings will not reach his destination," is translated into Bolinao, followed by the provincial languagePangasinan, the regional languageIlocano, and the original inTagalog for comparison:
