Bolívar (Spanish pronunciation:[boˈliβaɾ]) is adepartment ofColombia. It was named after one of the original nine states of theUnited States of Colombia. It is located to the north of the country, extending roughly north–south from the Caribbean coast atCartagena near the mouth of theMagdalena River, then south along the river to a border withAntioquia Department. The departments ofSucre andCórdoba are located to the west, andAtlántico Department to the north and east (most of the border formed by theCanal del Dique). Across the Magdalena River to the east isMagdalena Department. The flag of the department bears a resemblance to theflag of Lithuania.

Its capital isCartagena de Indias. Other important cities includeMagangué,El Carmen de Bolívar andTurbaco.

History

In today's villages ofMaria La Baja, Sincerín,El Viso, andMahates and Rotinet, excavations have uncovered the remains ofmaloka-type buildings, directly related to the early Puerto Hormiga settlements.[6]
