The road also forms the southern boundary of theManila North Cemetery. It is named afterBohemian professor andfilipinologistFerdinand Blumentritt.

The road's original length from Rizal Avenue to Dimasalang Street in Santa Cruz was originally namedCalle Sangleyes[3] (Spanish for "Chinese merchants street"), referring to its original residents. The portion up to theManila North Cemetery was also a right-of-way of thetranvía until 1945.[4] The road passes through theChinese General Hospital and Medical Center and the Manila North Green Park before turning southeast in Sampaloc. The road intersects withDimasalang Street,A. Bonifacio Avenue, N.S. Amoranto Sr. Avenue, Laon Laan Road, andEspaña Boulevard before terminating at G. Tuazon Street inSampaloc, near its boundary with San Isidro (Galas),Quezon City. It is served by theBlumentritt LRT station andBlumentritt PNR station at Rizal Avenue.

The section of the road between Rizal Avenue and A. Bonifacio Avenue is a component ofNational Route 160 (N160), while the section between A. Bonifacio Avenue andEspaña Boulevard is designatedNational Route 161 (N161); both routes are of thePhilippine highway network. The remaining section, considered its extension up to G. In June 2016, a majorflood control project on this road was completed.[5]
