Blaydon and Consett is aconstituency of theHouse of Commons in theUK Parliament.[1] Created as a result of the2023 review of Westminster constituencies, it was first contested at the2024 general election and is currently held byLiz Twist of theLabour Party, who previously represented the abolishedBlaydon constituency from 2017 to 2024.[2]
The Blaydon and Consett constituency is located inNorth East England and covers rural areas to the south-west ofNewcastle-upon-Tyne. It stretches over parts ofTyne and Wear (specifically theMetropolitan Borough of Gateshead) andCounty Durham. Settlements in the constituency include the towns ofBlaydon andConsett, the large villages ofRyton andCrawcrook, and other smaller villages.
The constituency sits at the edge ofthe Pennines and is predominantly upland and rural. The towns of Blaydon and Consett have anindustrial heritage, particularly incoal mining andsteelmaking.[3][4] Compared to national averages, residents are generally more religious and have similar levels of wealth, education and professional employment.White people make up 98% of the population.[5]
The area around Blaydon had itsmost recent local council election in 2024 and all seats in the area were won byLabour Party candidates. The Consett area had itsmost recent local council election in 2025 and elected predominantlyReform UK councillors. In the2016 referendum onEuropean Union membership, an estimated 56% of voters in the constituency supportedBrexit, slightly higher than the national figure of 52%.[5]
The constituency crosses the boundary of the ceremonial counties ofDurham andTyne and Wear and is composed of the following (as they existed on 1 December 2020):
