Blackbird is anunincorporated community inNew Castle County,Delaware, United States. Blackbird is located at the intersection ofU.S. Route 13 and Blackbird Station Road, southeast ofTownsend. TheBlackbird State Forest is nearby.[2]
The community was originally a stagecoach stop along the King's Highway and was settled around a mill at the head of theBlackbird Creek. The name is believed to have originally been Blackbeard after the pirateBlackbeard, who, according to tradition, used the lower part of the Blackbird Creek as a harbor and stored booty along its banks.[3]
