Bishop's Falls is a town in the north-central part of the island ofNewfoundland in theCanadian province ofNewfoundland and Labrador, with a population of 3,082 at the2021 census.[2]
It is inDivision No. 6, on theExploits River, near the town ofGrand Falls-Windsor and the town ofBotwood. It is commonly thought of as having the warmest summer temperatures in all of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nestled along the Exploits River, the town derives its name from the waterfalls within its boundaries.
The railroad played a pivotal role in shaping Bishop's Falls, serving as a central hub for theCaribou passenger train, colloquially referred to as The Newfie Bullet. A remarkable trestle stands in the town, the longest east of Quebec. This trestle withstood powerful ice flows and floods that destroyed its predecessors.
In the2021 Census of Population conducted byStatistics Canada, Bishop's Falls had a population of3,082 living in1,422 of its1,540 total private dwellings, a change of-2.3% from its 2016 population of3,156.[1] With a land area of 26.38 km2 (10.19 sq mi), it had a population density of116.8/km2 (302.6/sq mi) in 2021.[2]
