Binchester almost certainly takes the first element of its name from the first element of the earlier Roman nameVinovia. This was Anglicised with the addition of the Old English wordceaster '(Roman) fortification' and perhaps through identification with the Old English wordbinn 'manger'.[2]
Binchester was formerly atownship in the parish ofSt Andrew-Auckland,[3] in 1866 Binchester became a separatecivil parish, on 1 April 1937 the parish was abolished and merged with Bishop Auckland.[4] In 1931 the parish had a population of 60.[5]
