Berit Elisabet Andersson (11 November 1935 – 14 April 2019),[1][2] known professionally asBibi Andersson (Swedish:[ˈbɪ̂bːɪˈânːdɛˌʂɔn]), was a Swedish actress who was best known for her frequent collaborations with filmmakerIngmar Bergman.

Early life and career

Andersson was born inKungsholmen, Stockholm, the daughter of Karin (née Mansion), asocial worker, and Josef Andersson, a businessman.[3][4]

Her first collaboration withIngmar Bergman came in 1951,[5] when she participated in his production of an advertisement for thedetergent Bris.[6] She also worked as an extra on film sets as a teenager,[2] and studied acting at the Terserus Drama School and at theRoyal Dramatic Theatre School (1954–1956).[3][4] She then joined theRoyal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.[7]

In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Andersson starred in 10 motion pictures and three television films directed by Bergman. WithIngrid Thulin,Eva Dahlbeck andBarbro Hiort af Ornäs, she shared theBest Actress Prize at the1958 Cannes Film Festival for the director'sBrink of Life, a film set in amaternity ward.[8] The other films includedThe Seventh Seal,Wild Strawberries,The Magician,The Passion of Anna,The Touch, andPersona.[5]

In 1963, Andersson won theSilver Bear for Best Actress at the13th Berlin International Film Festival for her performance inVilgot Sjöman'sThe Mistress.[9]

From the mid-1960s onwards

Andersson's intense portrayal of a nurse in the filmPersona (1966) – in which actress Elizabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann), suffering from a psychosomatic condition, is mostly mute – involved her delivering the majority of the dialogue.[8] For her performance inPersona, she won the award forBest Actress at the4th Guldbagge Awards.[10] That year, she was seen alongsideJames Garner andSidney Poitier in the WesternDuel at Diablo.[2] More Bergman collaborations followed, and she worked withJohn Huston (The Kremlin Letter, 1970)[11] andRobert Altman (Quintet, 1979, withPaul Newman).[12] She was actorSteve McQueen's co-star in his only film with credit as a producer, a stage adaptation byArthur Miller ofHenrik Ibsen'sAn Enemy of the People (1977).[13]

Andersson made her debut in American theatre in 1973 with a production ofErich Maria Remarque'sFull Circle.[14] Her most famous American film isI Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977), which also starredKathleen Quinlan.[15]

In 1990, Andersson worked as a theatre director in Stockholm, directing several plays atDramaten.[16] In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she worked primarily in television and as a theatre actress, working with Bergman and others. She was also a supervisor for the Road to Sarajevo, a humanitarian project.[17]

Personal life

In 1996, Andersson published her autobiography,Ett ögonblick (A Moment, or, literally,A Blink of the Eye).[18] She was married first to the directorKjell Grede (1960, divorced) with whom she had a daughter; and secondly to politician and writerPer Ahlmark (1979, divorced).[citation needed] Andersson then married Gabriel Mora Baeza on 29 May 2004.[19] In 2009, she had a stroke;[20] an article published the following year says that from that time on she had been hospitalized and was unable to speak.[21]

She was the younger sister of Swedish film actressGerd Andersson.

Andersson died on 14 April 2019, aged 83 from complications of a stroke.[2][22]
