Bharat Balkrishna Dave (16 August 1948 – 15 May 2021) was an Indian drama director, dramatist and television producer fromGujarat, India.[1] He was honored with theGaurav Puraskar (1991) byGujarat Government,[2] theKumar Suvarna Chandrak (2016) and theNarmad Suvarna Chandrak (2016).[2]
Dave was born on 16 August 1948 inAhmedabad. He completed his M.A. fromGujarat University in 1971 and LLB studies in 1972. Due to his interest in drama, he completed a one-year diploma in theNatya Sangh of Bombay in 1973 and then a three-year diploma in direction from Alkazi Saheb at theNational School of Drama, Delhi in 1976.[3][2] He had learnt thesitar and also used to do painting.[4] He returned to Ahmedabad and joined theDarpana Academy of Performing Arts established byMrinalini Sarabhai.[3] In 1977, he became a television program producer at theIndian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) office in Ahmedabad.[1] UnderFulbright Scholarship, he received six months of training for communication technology in television production atSyracuse University inNew York.[1]
In 1978, Dave founded a theatre group,Saptasindhu and staged more than 20 works by regional, national and international writers.[1] In 1980, he directedRasiklal Parikh's playMena Gurjari (Mena of Gujarat) for theNational School of Drama.[1] In 1985, his playMuktadhara was selected at the National Drama Festival organized by theSangeet Natak Akademi.[1] He directed the playManvini Bhavai, staged at theJnanpith Award ceremony in 1987.[1] The memories of his theatrical activities have been published asRangyatra.[5]
He died on 15 May 2021 followingCOVID-19.[5][3][2][6]
In 1991, Dave received 'Critics Sandhan Award'[1] and honored with theGaurav Puraskar byGujarat Government.[2] In 2016, He was awardedKumar Suvarna Chandrak and won theNarmad Suvarna Chandrak (2016) for his bookVastavvadi Natak.[2] He won theDhirubhai Thakar Savyasachi Saraswat Award (2018) for his significant contribution in the field of drama.[7]
