Bezdan (Serbian Cyrillic:Бездан;Hungarian:Bezdán,Croatian:Bezdan,German:Besdan) is a village located inBačka,Vojvodina,Serbia. It is situated in theSombor municipality,West Bačka District. The village has aHungarian ethnic majority and its population numbers at 5,263 people (2002 census).

History

It was first mentioned in 1305 under the name ofBattyan, while in 1341 it was mentioned asBetsan. The village was destroyed during anOttoman invasion in the 16th century. With the establishment ofHabsburg rule, the village was settled byHungarians,Poles,Czechs andGermans. The first church in the village was built in 1755, and the current one was constructed in 1846.
