Astrometric binary star in the constellation Octans
Beta Octantis ,Latinized from β Octantis, is a probableastrometric binary [ 10] star system in the southerncircumpolar constellation ofOctans . It is faintly visible to the naked eye with anapparent visual magnitude of 4.13.[ 2] Based upon an annualparallax shift of 21.85 mas as seen from Earth, it is located about 149 light years from theSun . It is moving away from the Sun with aradial velocity of +19 km/s.[ 5]
Based upon astellar classification of A9IV-V,[ 3] the visible component is anevolving , white-huedA-type star with aspectrum that shows mixed traits of amain sequence and asubgiant star . It has an estimated 2.27[ 6] times themass of the Sun and 3.2[ 7] times theSun's radius . The star is around 500 million years old[ 8] with aprojected rotational velocity of 49 km/s.[ 6] It is radiating 42[ 6] times theSun's luminosity from itsphotosphere at aneffective temperature of 8,006 K.[ 8]
