β1-Adrenergic receptor agonists, also known asbeta-1 agonists, are a class ofdrugs thatbind selectively to theβ1-adrenergic receptor. As a result, they act more selectively upon theheart. β-Adrenoceptors typically bind tonorepinephrine release bysympathetic adrenergic nerves and to circulatingepinephrine. The effect of β-adrenoceptors iscardiac stimulation, such as increasedheart rate, heart contractility, heart conduction velocity, and heart relaxation.[1]
Examples include:
Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, likeatomoxetine, methylphenidate, andcocaine, as well asnorepinephrine releasing agents, likeamphetamine, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, andphenylpropanolamine, indirectly activate β1-adrenergic receptors (as well as other adrenergic receptors) by increasing norepinephrine and/or epinephrine levels.[4] As a result, they can be referred to as indirectly acting sympathomimetics.[4]
