TheBessarabskyi Market (Ukrainian:Бессарабський ринок,romanized: Bessarabs'kyi rynok), orBesarabskyi Market (Ukrainian:Бесарабський ринок), also referred to as theBessarabka (Ukrainian:Бессарабка), is an indoormarket located in the center ofKyiv on theBessarabska Square at the southwest end of the city's main thoroughfare, theKhreshchatyk. Constructed from 1910 to 1912 to a design of Polish architectHenryk Julian Gay, the market features 896 square metres (9,640 sq ft) of market space.
Its name originates fromBessarabia,[1] a region conquered by theRussian Empire during theRusso-Turkish Wars and now partially located in southwestern Ukraine on the territory of theOdesa Oblast (province).
