Besagews, also spelledbesagues, are a type ofrondel designed to protect the armpits, as part of a harness ofplate armour. The armpits are the location of theaxillary arteries, and protecting them was therefore vital. Armour without besagues might employ larger shoulder defenses, such as wingedpauldrons, or simply leave themail beneath exposed.
