Dagoberto Cueto Concepción (August 14, 1937 – October 25, 2011) was aCuban-born professionalbaseball player. The native ofSan Luis, Pinar del Río, was aright-handedpitcher whose nine-year career included sevengames pitched inMajor League Baseball for the1961Minnesota Twins. He was listed as a lanky 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) tall and 170 pounds (77 kg).
Cueto was signed in 1956 by legendaryscoutJoe Cambria of theWashington Senators of 1901–1960, and was in his sixth year with the organization when he was recalled fromTriple-ASyracuse during theMLB franchise's first season as the Twins. He was astarting pitcher in five of his seven Minnesota appearances, including his MLB debut on June 18, 1961, against theChicago White Sox atComiskey Park. Although his day began badly when he allowed twosingles, abase on balls, astolen base and arun to the first three hitters he faced, Cueto settled down and pitched into theninth inning with a 3–1 lead. But, oneout away from his first big-league victory, Cueto surrendered a game-tyinghome run topinch hitterBilly Goodman and was removed from the contest.Relief pitcherPedro Ramos then gave up a game-winning homer to eventualBaseball Hall of FamerNellie Fox.[1] Cueto would gain his first and only MLB win in his last game with the Twins on July 26, working a scoreless one-third of an inning against theexpansion Senators of 1961–1971 and halting a five-run Washington rally to preserve Minnesota's eventual 10–9 win.[2]
Cueto posted an MLBwon–lost mark of 1–3 during his Twins' career. In 211⁄3 total MLBinnings pitched, he permitted 27hits and ten bases on balls, andstruck out five. Hisearned run average was a disappointing 7.17.
He died inCharlotte, North Carolina, one of hisminor-league stops, at the age of 74 in 2011.
