Bernard Spolsky (Hebrew:ברנרד ספולסקי; born inWellington, New Zealand 11 February 1932; died inJerusalem, Israel 20 August 2022) was aprofessor emeritus in linguistics atBar-Ilan University (Israel), specializing insociolinguistics,educational linguistics, andapplied linguistics.[1][2]
Born to aJewish family in Wellington, New Zealand, Spolsky moved to Israel in 1958 after completing his studies atWellington College and getting his degree atVictoria University.[3] He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from theUniversity of Montreal in 1966. After briefly serving in theIsrael Defense Forces he taught at several North American universities such asMcGill University,Indiana University, and theUniversity of New Mexico. His large body of linguistic research encompassesbilingual education,language policy, and educational linguistics.[3]
Spolsky's works are related to language testing, second language learning, computers in the humanities, applied linguistics, educational linguistics, sociolinguistics and language policy.[4]
