Bernard Semmel (July 23, 1928 – August 18, 2008) was an American historian specialising in British imperial history.[1]
Bernard Semmel was born in theBronx, and attended New York City public schools. He received his B.A. from theCollege of the City of New York in 1947, and his Ph.D. fromColumbia University in 1955. His first academic position was atPark College in 1956; he visited theLondon School of Economics in 1959-60, working withLionel Robbins. He taught at theState University of New York at Stony Brook from 1960 until 1990, when he was appointed Distinguished Professor in the History department at theCUNY Graduate Center. He retired in 1996.[1]
