Berkovići (Serbian Cyrillic:Берковићи) is a village and municipality inRepublika Srpska,Bosnia and Herzegovina. As of 2013, it has a population of 2,114 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is located in the westernmost part ofEast Herzegovina.[1]

History

The old town of Koštun near Berkovići from the early Middle Ages, built of very large stones, was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004.[2]

Medieval artifacts include numerousstećak monuments, some of exceptional historical value. The site of Potkuk stećak necropolis in Bitunja is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.[3]

The municipality was created in 1995, after theBosnian War, out of theRepublika Srpska-controlled parts of the pre-war municipality ofStolac (now in theFederation of B&H).[4] The village was struck by abig earthquake on April 22, 2022 with a magnitude of5.7 on the Richter scale.[5]
